Topic outline

  • General

    The course is addressed to students participating in the project " International Partnership for Improving the Quality of Teaching in Vocational Schools." Its aim is to familiarize participants with the main ethical principles applicable in business and education ethical attitudes of future employees , managers and employers.

  • 1. The scope and purpose of business ethics and basic definitions

    The block contains two topics. The first concerns the basic definitions of business ethics. The second topic discusses the impact of ethical behavior on the company's profits.

    I am suggesting that topics in this block should be executed in the given order.

  • 2. Manager

    The module contains four topics that describe an ethical attitude of a manager. There is the definition of the manager, what areas are managed by the managers, what role has the manager to fulfill in the company. It shows the characteristics and skills used in ethical realization of the objectives. The last topic describes the situation that was resolved in accordance with the principles of morality. At the end of the module there is a glossary, list of defined terms connected with ethical attitude of the manager.
    It is recommended to start with introductory topic „Business manager". Topics second and third do not have to be implemented in a set order. The module should be completed with the case study of the ethical attitude of the manager.

  • 3. Employer

    The module consists of 9 topics describing the obligations of the employer to the employee. It discusses the principle of equal opportunities, which should be used by employers during recruitment and at work. The module shows the types of contracts which can be made by employer. There are also examples of unfair practices when awarding contracts and examples of unethical behavior of employer. In the case study, students will determine which ethical rules of conduct towards an employee were violated by the employer, what are the effects of such behaviour, and how can it be resolved in an ethical manner. It is recommended that subjects were carried out in the given order.

  • 4. Ethical employee

    The module contains four topics discussing the issues describing ethical and unethical attitude of the employee. The concept of an employee is defined. It shows the characteristics and skills that help ethically perform tasks at work. Also the causes of unethical behavior are discussed and there are examples of such behaviour. Case studies aim at strengthening the ethical behavior of employees. At the end of the module there is a glossary, where concepts are defined related to the ethical attitude of the employee.
    It is recommended to start with introductory topic "Ethical employee." Case studies can be carried out after discussing the topics "Ethical employee" and "Unethical behavior of the employee" in any order.

  • 5. Gaining fair profits

    The block include six topics about issues related with ethical principles of gaining profits. There were discussed consumer rights connected with the purchase of defective goods and the obligations of a seller related with complaint of such products. The case study helps to solidify informations connected with complaint of goods. In topic about corruption was defined, what  are they material benefit what personal benefit, what kind of penalties are for corruption and what ways to fight with it. Other issue helps to separate lobbing from  running backstage business. The topic about intellectual property shows us how to protect it and how to register industrial property in order to protect it. The topic that finish this block shows us the Corporate Social Responsibility conception. At the end of the block contains a glossary of terms, where were defined concepts of ethical gaining profits. Topics in that block can be realizing in any order. Only “Protection of consumer rights - a case study” should be discuss after introduction to “Customers. The liability of the consumer”.

  • 6. Codes of ethics

    In this module, participants will become familiar with the most important information about the code of ethics and they will develop a code of ethics for the profession, which they learn at school. The module consists of a topic describing the most important information about a code of ethics, and the theme carried out for three hours: development of a code of ethics for the profession.
